PARIAH

"PARIAH"  ( one that is despised or rejected : outcast  )

I WAS VERY SURPRISED TO TURN ON A LITTLE USED CABLE TV STATION AND SEE THIS FILM PLAYING.  I KNEW IT WAS A LOW BUDGET, INDEPENDENT FILM --
SAYING LOW BUDGET AND INDEPENDENT  IS BEING REDUNDANT.  HAVING A "small" FILM LIKE THIS MAKE IT TO TV IS A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.
THE STORY IS ABOUT A YOUNG GIRL AND HER FAMILY DEALING WITH
HER LESBIAN SEXUALITY.
COMING OF AGE SEXUALLY FOR ANY AND EVERYONE IS AN ADVENTUROUS AND STRESSFUL TIME OF LIFE -- NO MATTER WHO YOU ARE SNEAKING INTO YOUR ROOM, REGARDLESS OF GENDER, IT IS A TIME THAT WILL NOT GROW FAINT OVER THE PASSAGE OF  DECADES. VIRGINITY IS NOT A CONDITION THAT LENDS ITSELF TO REPETITION.
HAVING BASICALLY UNKNOWN AND LITTLE KNOWN ACTORS IN THE ROLES, MADE
EVERYTHING SEEM MORE REALISTIC - KIM WAYANS, AS THE NEUROTIC MOTHER OF THE
YOUNG GIRL, WAS THE BEST KNOWN ACTRESS AND IT WAS SOMEWHAT OF A DISTRACTION, SINCE I WAS EXPECTING HER TO SAY OR DO SOMETHING
COMEDIC -- BUT SHE WAS GOOD IN THE PART, DESPITE MY FOOLISH
EXPECTATION.  THERE IS NO GLAMOUR IN THIS FILM - IT IS HARDCORE AND
STAYS IN THE MOMENT, NO SIDE-TRIPS -- IT IS WORTH KEEPING AN EYE OUT FOR
AS YOU TURN THE DIAL OR RENT A DVD.
