There is a small minority of decent people in this fine movie, but the vast majority of characters are without any recognizable value to society. Micky Ward is surrounded by a dysfunctional family. It was emotionally painful to observe these social misfits do everything in their ignorant existence to destroy the career of the one family member who has any concept of a what constitutes normal human decency.
Christian Bale ( Batman ) and Melissa Leo ( of the great television series, Homicide: Life on the Streets ) are excellent as anchors to any hopes Mark Wahlberg has to rise from the slums to become a championship caliber boxer.
The fighter's true opponent is the greed, drug addiction and stupidity of his own family. Their lack of education and compassion is more brutal than the punches of any fighter in the ring.
This good fellow was unfortunately born into a family that are just plain, old fashioned TRASH.
AMY ADAMS IS GOOD IN A DIFFICULT ROLE - THE GIRLFRIEND.
THERE ARE GREAT PERFORMANCES BY SUPPORTING CHARACTERS IN THIS FILM.
BUT THEIR NAMES WOULD NOT BE RECOGNIZED BY ANYONE IN THE AUDIENCE.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
MICKY is the correct spelling.
